3 Tips for Wedding Photography Composition

Welcome back, fellow Boise photographers! Today, we’re diving into the world of composition. As a wedding photographer here in Idaho, I’m constantly looking for new ways to capture my couple’s love story and incorporate the venue and details they have brought to their unique day. Here are three tips to elevate your photography compositions and capture the essence of your adventurous couples.

Tip #1: Symmetry

Symmetry is a timeless and powerful compositional tool. Embrace the balance it brings to your wedding shots, whether it's the couple standing under a beautifully arched doorway or a reflection in a serene lake. Symmetry not only conveys a sense of harmony but also adds a touch of elegance to your images. Experiment with framing your shots symmetrically and watch as your compositions take on a new level of sophistication. The example of above uses the symmetry of the trees to echo the symmetry in the couple.

Tip #2: Foreground, Middleground, Background

To create depth and dimension in your wedding photographs, incorporate elements in the foreground, middleground, and background. This technique allows you to tell a more intricate visual story, drawing the viewer into the scene. Whether it's the details of a flower in the foreground, the couple in the middleground, and a stunning landscape in the background, this layered approach adds richness and complexity to your compositions. In this example, I have taken the bride’s bouquet and put it in front of my lens to create the feel of a hidden moment.

Tip #3: Experiment with Perspectives

Challenge yourself by exploring different viewpoints. Get low to the ground for a unique perspective that highlights details often overlooked. Alternatively, shooting from a higher vantage point can provide a captivating overview of the scene. Don't be afraid to experiment – it's through these explorations that you'll discover fresh and distinctive angles that speak to the heart of your couple's personality. In this example, I am shooting upwards while crouching on the floor.

In conclusion, as Boise photographers, let's embrace the wonder, joy, and adventure that our beautiful state offers. Use these composition tips to infuse creativity into your wedding photography, ensuring that each shot reflects the uniqueness of your couples. Happy shooting!
